Experimental Laboratory "Flux"

2021

St. John's Street Gallery, Vilnius

During the pandemic, my home became a creative laboratory, with aquariums filled not with fish, but with bacteria and yeast weaving living textiles through sympoietic, wet relations. I later moved these microorganisms into the basement of St. John's Street Gallery, where, as in a womb, life emerged, transformed, and eventually dissolved. In this underground space, I grew bacterial cellulose in large, murky water reservoirs, soaked linen sheets in rowan broth, and dyed wool fiber in a mixture of fungi and lichen. Wheat sprouts, grown hydroponically without soil, filled one of the basement chambers alongside homegrown lettuce and onions. In these underground hydrocommons, biotechnology, mythology, and everyday life organically converged.
